Young Londoners Should Have the Opportunity to Live & Work in EU, London Mayor Says

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is expected to argue during a meeting with the EU heads of mission that young Londoners should be given the right to live and work in the EU under facilitated rules.

As explained by Independent, during the meeting, Mayor Khan will require that young citizens of London be permitted to live and work in the EU countries, urging the government to support the youth mobility scheme, Schengen.News reports.

Despite the Prime Minister of the UK, Keir Starmer, saying that there will be no return to free movement, Mayor Sadiq has stressed that the move is very important.

Under this youth mobility scheme, young people between the ages of 18 and 30 would be able to move and work freely between the UK and the EU for up to two years without having to undergo extended requirements.

To express his support for the scheme, during the meeting, Khan will argue that the move would help economic growth and would also give young citizens of London and EU citizens important live experiences.

Moreover, as part of the scheme, Khan said that he is also keen to look into how both parties can make it easier for schoolchildren from the EU to visit the UK.

Khan to Reiterate His Stance That Brexit Was a Mistake
In addition to the above-mentioned, Khan is expected to tell the EU diplomats that “Brexit was a mistake”, this way renewing his backing for the scheme.

As the Guardian explains, at the meeting, Khan will tell the delegates that the withdrawal of the UK from the trading bloc is continuing to have a negative impact and at the same time call for efforts to seek closer alignment.

At the same time, Khan will also say that he remains passionate about growing and improving the relationship between the UK and the EU across every area, as according to him, this is essential in tackling a host of shared challenges.

Prime Minister Starmer finally agreed earlier this month to consider negotiating the youth mobility scheme with the EU.

However, no additional information has been shared on the matter yet and it is still to be confirmed if such negotiations will be taking place in the near future.

The British Prime Minister has been refraining from these negotiations due to the pressure from net migration numbers.
