Work in Lithuania: New Permit Requirements for Foreign Nationals

Lithuania has introduced stricter regulations for foreign workers, effective July 1, 2024, as part of the new Law on the Legal Status of Aliens.

The key change requires most foreign nationals seeking employment in Lithuania to obtain a temporary residence permit issued specifically by Lithuania.

This replaces the previous ability to work under visa-free regimes, national or Schengen visas, or residence permits from other countries.

However, certain exemptions apply, including for EU-based employees, short-term visitors (less than three months per year), and entrepreneurs with stakes in Lithuanian companies.

For those already working in Lithuania, they can continue until their current legal stay expires or they meet the new requirements.

Companies found hiring illegal or undeclared foreign workers face penalties, including a one-year ban on hiring new foreign employees.

Additionally, changes to the appeals process for residence permit cancellations mean that permits will be invalid during appeals.

If a foreigner fails to leave within 14 days of permit cancellation, they face deportation and a re-entry ban.

These regulations aim to better manage labor migration and require both foreign workers and employers to promptly adapt to avoid penalties.
