Indian students make up the largest group of international students in Canada, with over 420,000 enrolled, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. This is significantly higher than the 330,000 Indian students studying in the United States. 

The sudden requests have left many students uncertain about their future in Canada. For example, a business management student in British Columbia expressed concern over the timing of the emails, stating, “I’m already struggling to secure a mandatory internship for my final year. These policies make it feel like we’re not welcome here anymore.”

Immigration experts believe this move aligns with Canada’s broader strategy to manage the growing number of international students. 

According to an immigration consultant in Toronto, “These measures, including caps and financial requirements, aim to filter out genuine students. Many international students change their Designated Learning Institution (DLI) to ones with fewer restrictions on attendance, allowing them to work more hours in Canada.” 

Experts have advised students to act promptly on IRCC’s requests. “Failure to comply could result in visa cancellations or complications in the future. Students must follow the instructions provided in the emails carefully,” they added.
