This development is particularly significant for Indian students planning to commence or continue their studies in the United States for the Fall 2025 academic session.
This announcement comes after a period of concern among students and visa consultants due to the sudden unavailability of visa interview appointments since mid-March 2025. The disruption was attributed to system upgrades by the U.S. Embassy aimed at preventing misuse of the appointment system.
The U.S. has been a preferred destination for Indian students, with over 140,000 student visas issued in India in 2023, marking a record for the third consecutive year. The release of these new appointment slots is expected to alleviate the backlog and facilitate timely processing of student visas.
Steps to Apply for a U.S. Student Visa:
1. Admission to a SEVP-Approved Institution: Secure admission to a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-approved U.S. institution and obtain a Form I-20.
2. Pay the SEVIS Fee: Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of $350 and retain the receipt for your records.
3. Complete the DS-160 Form: Fill out the DS-160 visa application form online and save the confirmation page.
4. Create a Profile on the U.S. Travel Docs Website: Register to schedule appointments and track your application.
5. Pay the Visa Application Fee: Pay the Machine Readable Visa (MRV) fee of $185 through the available payment options.
6. Schedule Appointments: Book two appointments: one at the Offsite Facilitation Center (OFC) for biometrics and another for the visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
7. Attend the Visa Interview: Prepare all necessary documents, including your passport, Form I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS and MRV fee receipts, financial documents, and academic records, and attend the interview as scheduled.
