US student visa rejected? Embassy official explains what could have gone wrong

In 2023, a record 253,355 student visas for international students were denied by consular officials worldwide.

Despite this high number, the US Embassy encourages students not to be disheartened.

"We encourage students not to focus on denials, as most student visa applicants in India will receive the visa on their first try," US Embassy Spokesperson Chris Elms told TOI's Priyanka Srivastava.

Understanding the common reasons for visa rejections and adequately preparing for the interview can significantly improve an applicant’s chances, he said.

While the high number of denials might seem daunting, thorough preparation and a clear understanding of the requirements can greatly enhance the chances of success.

Top Reasons for Visa Rejections

The most frequent reason for visa denial is the inability to demonstrate a clear intention to return to India after completing studies in the U.S. This requirement ensures that the visa is used for its intended temporary purpose

Other reasons for rejection include incomplete documentation and insufficient information provided during the interview.

Sometimes, visas are denied because additional documents or further case evaluations are needed, which can be resolved once the necessary information is provided.

Preparation Tips for Visa Applicants

To better prepare for the visa interview, students should ensure all required documents are in order:

1. Mandatory Documents:
  • Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant Student Status)
  • SEVIS fee receipt
  • DS-160 confirmation page with barcode
2. Valid passport
3. Visa application fee receipt
4. Two recent passport-sized photographs
5. Additional Supporting Documents:
  • Financial records demonstrating the ability to cover tuition and living expenses
  • Previous academic records
  • Interview Preparation
Students should be ready to discuss their academic plans and funding sources in their own words.

Being clear and confident about their study goals, chosen university, course details, and career aspirations can help convey their genuine intent.

Practicing potential questions and answers can also aid in delivering a coherent and convincing interview.
