Unified E-Visa Simplifies Travel to Russia for Indian Passport Holders

Russia is planning to introduce visa-free travel for Indian tourists, following the success of its programs with China and Iran. With the Unified E-Visa already simplifying travel, this move could further strengthen tourism and business ties between the two nations.

Indian travellers may soon enjoy visa-free access to Russia, a move expected to bolster tourism and business ties between the two nations. Following the success of Russia’s visa-free tourist exchange program with China and Iran, a similar arrangement with India could take effect as early as spring 2025. 

India as a Key Market for Russian Tourism 
India has emerged as a significant source of tourism for Russia, with 28,500 Indian travellers visiting Moscow in the first half of 2024—a 1.5-fold increase compared to 2023. 

According to Evgeny Kozlov, Chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee, most Indian visitors come for business or work-related purposes, underscoring India’s growing importance to Russian tourism. 

Unified E-Visa: A Game Changer 
Currently, Indian passport holders can apply for a Unified E-Visa (UEV), introduced on August 1, 2023. This single-entry visa allows travel across the Russian Federation for tourism, business, or participation in events such as scientific, cultural, or sports activities.

• Processing Time: Typically four days. 
• Eligibility: Citizens of 64 countries, including India, can apply. 
• Purpose: Covers personal, business, and event participation needs. 

Indian travellers can apply online via the official Russian consulate portal for an efficient and streamlined experience. 

Visa-Free Program: What Could Change? 
The proposed visa-free travel agreement aims to simplify travel for Indian tourists through a group tourist exchange program. If implemented, it will remove the need for Indian travellers to navigate Russia’s detailed visa application process, which currently requires choosing from various visa categories such as tourist, business, humanitarian, private, work, or student visas. 

This initiative aligns with Russia’s strategy to strengthen tourism partnerships and replicate the success of its programs with China and Iran.

Indian passport holders already enjoy visa-free access to 62 countries, making international travel easier. Adding Russia to this list would further enhance travel opportunities for Indian tourists, fostering greater cultural and economic exchange.

Application Process for the Unified E-Visa 
For travellers not covered by the visa-free program yet, here’s how to apply for a Unified E-Visa: 

1. Online Registration: Schedule an appointment through the Consular Division portal (Russian Embassy in New Delhi). 
2. Documentation: Ensure the personal data on your documents matches the information in the pre-registration system to avoid rejection. 
3. Appointment Slot: Submit one set of documents per reserved appointment slot. 

Diplomats and officials have a separate streamlined application process through consular institutions.
