Understanding the F-2 visa: Can you work, study in the US if you're an F-1 dependent?

The F-2 Visa is a non-immigrant, temporary permit allowing the immediate family members of F-1 Student Visa holders to join them in the United States.

This guide provides an overview of the F-2 Dependent Visa, including eligibility, application process, and important regulations.

What is the F2 Dependent Visa?

The F-2 Dependent Visa is intended for the eligible immediate family members of F-1 Visa holders, including:

  • Spouses (husbands and wives)
  • Unmarried children under 21 years who are not living independently
  • The F-2 Visa allows these family members to reside in the US while the F-1 Visa holder pursues their education. However, F-2 visa holders are not permitted to engage in paid employment or pursue education, although children may attend full-time elementary or secondary school, and adults may take non-vocational or recreational courses.

Application Process for the F-2 Visa

To apply for an F-2 Visa, the main F-1 Visa must first be approved by USCIS. Following this, you can:
  • Submit Form I-20A-B (Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant Student Status).
  • Apply at a US consulate by filling out Form DS-160 (Non-immigrant Visa Application).
  • If already in the US on a different permit, you can change your status to an F2 Visa.
  • Steps to Apply for an F2 Visa
  • Complete Form I-20A-B: This form certifies eligibility for non-immigrant student status.
  • Submit Form DS-160: Required if applying from a US consulate.
  • Prepare Supporting Documents: Include valid passports, marriage certificates (for spouses), birth certificates (for children), evidence of sufficient funds, and proof of intent to return home after the F1 Visa holder’s education is complete.
  • Required Documents for an F2 Visa
  • Marriage Certificate: For dependent spouses.
  • Birth/Adoption Certificates: For dependent children.
  • Proof of Funds: Evidence of sufficient funds to support the family while in the US.
  • Proof of Return: Evidence showing intent to return home after the F1 student's education, such as a return flight ticket or proof of strong ties to the home country.

F-2 Visa Duration and Renewal

The F-2 Visa is valid for the same duration as the F-1 Visa. Both are non-immigrant permits valid for the “duration of stay,” meaning visa holders must leave the US upon the completion of the F-1 student’s course of study.

F-1 Visa holders can renew their status, and F-2 dependents can stay in the US as long as the F-1 status is valid.

Changing Status from an F-2 Visa

The F-2 Visa does not directly lead to a Green Card. However, it is possible to change your status while in the US. You may:
  • Find a US-based sponsor to change your status.
  • Apply for a different permit before seeking full-time employment or education.
Violating the terms of the F2 Visa may complicate status changes. If you travel abroad before receiving a new visa and your F2 permit has expired, you may face re-entry challenges.
