UK announces increase in work visa fees for foreign workers

UK immigration rules are being changed, with new requirements imposed on foreign workers. The majority of the new immigration laws in the United Kingdom will take effect on April 9, 2025. Care providers who wish to hire a new employee from abroad starting on April 9 must first demonstrate that they have made an effort to hire an employee from England who requires new sponsorship.

Modifications to skilled worker visas’ minimum pay are also being made. As of April 9, the minimum salary floor will change from £23,200 (about US$30,171) per year (or £11.90 per hour) to £25,000 (or £12.82 per hour). A 37.5-hour workweek is the basis for these positions’ yearly pay.

Further, the UK Home Office has published a new set of immigration fees that to be implemented from 9 April 2025. Foreigners will now have to shell out higher fees in different categories, including work, study, and visit visa application fees, naturalization fees, and employer sponsorship expenses.

The fees vary for work visa applications made from outside the UK or applied from within the country. In both cases, the work visa fees will increase.

A Skilled Worker visa allows you to come to or stay in the UK to do an eligible job with an approved employer. This visa has replaced the Tier 2 (General) work visa.

To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, you must:
• work for a UK employer that’s been approved by the Home Office
• have a ‘certificate of sponsorship’ (CoS) from your employer with information about the role you’ve been offered in the UK
