The Trump Administration appears to have drafted a new travel ban which would affect individuals from several countries.
The travel ban appears to stem from the Executive Order signed on January 20, 2025, entitled “Protecting the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats,” which gave administration officials a 60-day deadline to identify countries posing potential threats to national security.
As of March 2025, reporting from the White House is verifying that the administration is still working on finalizing a “red list” of countries whose citizens would be barred from entering the U.S. once the travel ban is implemented. However, a draft proposal has revealed some of the countries that are likely to be on the list.
Said countries include:
Sudan
Venezuela
Somalia
Syria
Yemen
Iran
Libya
Cuba
North Korea
Further to this list, reporting also indicates that the administration is considering adding Afghanistan and Pakistan to the list.
The proposed travel ban will also reportedly implement a color tier system for assessing countries and the threats they may pose to U.S. security-specifically, it will consist of three levels: red, orange, and yellow, and those countries that are designated as red would face a complete travel ban.
Individuals from countries that are designated as orange will have limited access to the U.S., (no further details given about what those restrictions are at this time), and countries designated as yellow will receive a 60-day window to address any deficiencies in their vetting or security procedures before possibly facing further restrictions.
It should be noted that this is a proposed travel ban and the list of countries is not finalized yet, and that no official announcement has been made by the administration or White House.
Previously during his first term, President Trump’s administration barred individuals from predominantly Muslim countries including Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Nigeria, and Somalia, as well as Venezuela, Kyrgyzstan, Eritrea, Myanmar, and North Korea.
The previous travel ban did not prevent individuals from the above countries from getting nonimmigrant visas alike: F-1, J-1, and H-1B, or being able to be admitted into the U.S. under these categories.
