Türkiye’s EU Accession a “Strategic Priority”, President Erdogan Says

Türkiye considers the European Union Membership process a “strategic priority” as it is an inseparable part of Europe, Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.

Erdogan also emphasised that Europe’s security without Türkiye is “unimaginable”, Schengen.News reports.

According to a report from Anadolu Agency, the Turkish President’s comments were addressed to foreign ambassadors serving in Ankara.

The Turkish President also said that Europe must be aware of his country’s status, expressing his hopes that “European friends” advance Türkiye’s membership to the European Union.

Earlier this month, President Erdogan also said that full accession to the EU would throw a lifeline to the EU’s aging economy and workforce.

The Turkish President also stressed that the membership process would bring mutual benefits and respect.

According to the President, the results can be achieved within a short period, if the necessary will is shown. Therefore, he said that the European countries that lead should not continue insisting on mistakes.

“EU Incomplete Without Türkiye”
The recent developments between the US and Ukraine have sparked concerns among the European countries, therefore some authorities in Türkiye believe that tightened relations between the EU and Türkiye are needed.

The retired Ambassador Volkan Vural, told Türkiye Today that Europe needs military support that can be offered by Türkiye.

He said that if Trump continues with this policy, it will contribute to deepening concerns that alliances like the EU are less important to the US, therefore Europe’s Security without Türkiye will remain incomplete.

EU Open to Deepen Connections With Türkiye
In December 2024, the European Union Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, in a meeting held with the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said that it is important that both parties work together on shared priorities.

In addition, von der Leyen stressed that the EU is open to deepening and tightening cooperation with Türkiye on visa liberalisation.

In December 2024, Erdogan also highlighted that European Union Membership remains among the main goals for his country.

The EU-Türkiye membership talks started in 2025, after stalling in the last years due to disagreements between both territories.
