This initiative aims to facilitate seamless travel across these nations through a single visa, similar to the European Schengen Visa. The program, named “6 countries, 1 destination,” positions Thailand as a pivotal tourism hub in the ASEAN region.

A key component of this initiative is the proposed 180-day extension for the recently launched Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). The Thai government is also introducing an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, designed to simplify the visa application process for travelers, making it faster and more secure.

The DTV permits foreigners to stay or work in Thailand for a maximum of 180 days and is valid for up to five years. The application fee is $280, with an additional $280 required for a 180-day extension. This visa is particularly attractive to remote workers, digital nomads, and freelancers, although applicants must meet specific financial criteria, including a minimum balance of $15,108 in their bank accounts and a prohibition on earning income within Thailand.

Recent statistics reveal that approximately 1,200 DTV visas have already been approved through various embassies and consulates. In the first quarter of 2024, Thailand welcomed 9.3 million tourists, a notable increase from 8 million during the same period in 2023.

To qualify for the Destination Thailand Visa, applicants must:

Have adequate funds to cover the visa fee.
Show a minimum balance of 500,000 THB in their bank account to support their stay.
