In the first three months of 2025, the number of residence permits granted by Swedish authorities for family reunification reasons reached 7,379. Family residence permits became the most popular permits within this period.
According to the data published by the Swedish Migration Agency, the second most popular group of applicants to obtain residence permits granted in the first quarter of 2025, including the months of January, February, and March, were asylum seekers, Schengen.News reports.
A total of 6,872 residence permits were granted to asylum seekers, including applicants under the Temporary Protection Directive. About 2,394 or 34.8 per cent of these permits were issued in March alone.
Sweden: Fewer Residence Permits for Work & Study Purposes So Far in 2025
Swedish authorities have issued higher numbers of residence permits for family reunification and asylum seekers but that is not the case for work and study permits.
The data reveals that residence permits granted for employment purposes reached a total of 296 so far in 2025. A similar figure – 290, was issued to students obtaining residence permits in Sweden for their study purposes.
In March alone, 106 residence permits were granted for workers compared to 105 that were granted for study purposes. Compared to the figures recorded in March of 2024, the numbers are up significantly as four residence permits for work purposes were issued. In addition, a total of eight residence permits were granted to applicants for study purposes.
In the first quarter of 2024, Swedish authorities granted 49 residence permits for workers compared to 90 that were issued for those studying in the country.
Residence Permits for EU/EES Applicants Up Significantly in 2025
As the data show, in 2024, the number of residence permits granted to EU/EES applicants was 49 for the whole year.
Between January and March of 2025, the number of residence permits granted to this group of applicants was 3,167. In March alone, the number of permits for these applicants was 938 – more than 19 times higher than the permits granted for the whole year 2024.
Impediments to enforcement reached ten in March of 2025 – out of a total of 27 recorded so far in 2025. However, in the whole of 2024, the number of residence permits for impediments to enforcement reached 21.
