A total of €2 million has been allocated by the Spanish autonomous community Extremadura, in order to attract digital nomads from worldwide countries.
The decision comes as part of efforts to further boost Extremadura’s economy by attracting high-skilled professionals, and help increase the population of Schengen.News reports.
Currently, Extremadura has the lowest population density in Spain, with 26 inhabitants per square kilometre.
According to Santamaría, the region has had some transportation issues, in terms of communications, which is what digital nomads find it important, the region can compete with major national cities.
Among the requirements is to reside outside this region for at least six months before the “registration of residency” and establish their habitual residence in communities with less than 5,000 inhabitants for at least two years. Applicants from outside Spain are required to obtain a legal identification number.
According to a report from Traveling Lifestyle, women and men under the age of 30 will initially be awarded €10,000 once they are selected. Men older than 30 will receive €8,000.
After finishing the first two-year period, women and men under age 30 will receive €5,000, when extending their stay in the region for another year.
In addition, men older than 30 years who want to stay in this Spanish region for an additional year, will receive another €4,000.
Authorities in the region of Extremadura have confirmed that the call will remain open until the amount of €2 million designed for the participants is reached.
When it comes to Digital Nomad Visa, Spain has the world’s best program of this kind, an index provided by VisaGuide. The world revealed last year.
According to Lum Kamishi, Project Manager at VisaGuide.World, Spain’s low-income requirement for digital nomads and the lower costs of living compared to the other countries in this list are among the reasons that Spain is ranked in the first position in the Digital Nomad Visa Index of VisaGuide.World.
