Russia has initiated a major search-and-rescue operation in its far-east after a helicopter with 22 people on board, including many tourists, went missing. The Mi-8T helicopter departed from a base near the Vachkazhets volcano on the Kamchatka peninsula.
The emergencies ministry reported that the helicopter disappeared from radar shortly after takeoff on Saturday. Thick fog is impeding rescue efforts.
Operated by Vityaz-Aero, the helicopter was en route to the volcano and had not reported any issues before losing contact. The Mi-8, a Soviet-era model still widely used in Russia, had its last contact recorded around 16:15 local time (04:15 GMT).
Governor Vladimir Solodov confirmed that the helicopter was carrying 19 passengers and three crew members. Despite the ongoing aerial search, visibility remains poor, leading to additional ground searches along the Bystraya River valley, the planned route of the helicopter.
The Kamchatka peninsula, situated over 6,000 km (3,730 miles) east of Moscow, is known for its stunning volcanic landscapes and is a popular tourist destination. The region has experienced several aviation accidents in recent years, including two crashes within a two-month span in 2021. Rescue teams continue their efforts into the night, striving to locate the missing aircraft and ensure the safety of those on board.
