Portugal is done being one of Europe's most welcoming destinations for foreigners

Portugal is taking steps to revise its immigration policies, aiming to move away from its image as one of Europe's most welcoming destinations for immigrants.

Under the leadership of its right-leaning government, the country has recently revoked the "manifestation of interest" mechanism, a key provision that previously facilitated the residency process for non-European Union citizens.

The "manifestation of interest" allowed non-EU citizens to enter Portugal without a prior employment contract.

They could apply for residency after making social security payments for one year.

This pathway was particularly popular among digital nomads, who paid into the social security system while working remotely in Portugal, and workers in lower-wage sectors who might have faced challenges securing employment before arriving.

Supporters of this residency route argue that it integrated more individuals into Portugal's formal economy, allowing them to contribute to the tax system while they settled into more permanent employment.

However, critics have linked the influx of foreign workers to Portugal's ongoing housing crisis, though this accusation is contested by those on the left.

To manage immigration more selectively, the government plans to introduce new criteria that will prioritize certain groups.

This includes individuals from Portuguese-speaking countries, students, and high-skilled workers.

Reports from the Portuguese outlet Publico indicate that immigrants from countries like India, Nepal, and Bangladesh will be most affected by these changes.
