A total of 62 per cent of Polish respondents who participated in a survey from SW Research on behalf of Rzeczpospolita support the reintroduction of border controls within the European Union as a means to combat irregular migration.
The same revealed that 23 per cent were against the idea, while 15 per cent didn’t have an opinion, Schengen.News reports.
The survey’s question addressed to its respondents was, “Do you believe that the European Union should reintroduce border controls between countries in the Schengen Area to curb the flow of migrants?”
The survey found that almost two-thirds of people in Poland support the reintroduction of border controls.
Tightened Efforts to Combat Irregular Migration
The survey came amid ongoing debates on whether or not immigration rules should be tightened in its neighbouring country, Germany.
The German parliament recently rejected a conservative-backed immigration bill which was backed by the far-right AfD, preventing the law passed with the support of the AfD.
Authorities in Germany also mentioned plans to implement permanent border controls.
However, authorities in Poland have criticised the implementation of such measures.
Up to this point, several Schengen countries have reintroduced border controls to tighten their national security and combat irregular migration. The recent ones to inform the EU about the implementation of border controls, in addition to Germany, are Bulgaria, Slovenia, Malta, Italy and Hungary.
Poland Against Implementation of EU Migration Pact
In October 2024, about a month after the reintroduction of border controls by Germany, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radoslaw Sikorski, called it a mistake, expressing his country’s decision to disagree with Germany.
In addition to not supporting the introduction of border controls to combat irregular migration, Poland is also against the EU migration pact if its implementation consists in receiving relocated migrants.
The EU’s Pact on Migration and Asylum aims to improve security and prevent irregular migration into the EU. However, it consists of a solidarity framework designed to spread the burden between the bloc countries when it comes to asylum seekers.
The Prime Minister of Poland argued that permitting such relocations would waste the efforts of Polish police officers, soldiers as well as border guards who are risking their lives to prevent the threat of irregular migration and help make Poland among the safest places in Europe.
