Poland Pledges to Prioritise Ukraine’s EU Membership During Its Leadership

The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, pledged that his country will use its position to push forward Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.

From January 1, 2025, Poland holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union, which will last until June 30, 2025, Schengen.News reports.

The Polish PM’s comments came following a meeting held with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in Warsaw.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on the other hand, emphasised the urgency of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and NATO, considering it a critical security issue rather than a diplomatic or economic concern.

The Ukrainian President said the independence of Ukraine serves as a safeguard for the security and autonomy of Poland and other European countries, a principle he considered fundamental to Ukrainian-Polish cooperation.

Ukraine-EU Talks on Membership Chapters May Begin in Early 2025
Last month, the President of the European Union, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the European Union should be ready to open negotiations with Ukraine on the fundamentals cluster in early 2025 and other clusters during 2024.

Von der Leyen said that Ukraine has made tremendous progress toward EU accession. She said that Ukrainians are fighting for their future in the EU, and they must know their efforts are paying off, stressing that the flag of Ukraine will fly at the heart of the EU.

Ukraine’s Goal to Open All EU Negotiation Clusters in 2025
In December 2024, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said that Ukraine’s goal is to open all negotiating clusters with the EU in 2025.

The EU’s Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, said that Kyiv could join the bloc by 2029 if it completes the necessary reforms.

However, Ukraine’s EU membership bid may be subject to difficulties. Recently, Ukraine’s decision to halt Russian gas supplies has led to questioning Ukraine’s bilateral ties with Slovakia.

The ruling party in Slovakia, Hlas-SD, said that if the Ukrainian President wants to continue this approach towards Slovakia, it may reconsider support for Ukraine’s membership to the EU.
