Over 430,000 Passports & Other Documents Need Renewing in 2025, Norwegian Authorities Say

The Norwegian Police Directorate has advised citizens to renew their documents ahead of the summer holidays, in order to avoid bottlenecks and delays.

 It is estimated that over 430,000 documents, including here passports and IDs, need to be renewed in 2025.

In a press release, the Police calls on citizens to check when their passport or ID expires, and if they need to renew their respective documents, citizens are encouraged to book an appointment at the passport office in advance, Schengen.News reports.

Vandvik also warned citizens to pay attention to their phones, as individuals who need to renew their documents will be receiving an SMS as a reminder to book appointments for the renewal request. 

395,000 Passports in Norway Need to Be Renewed in 2025 
According to the Police Directorate, there are 395,000 passports and approximately 37,000 national ID cards that will expire in 2025. 

All of these documents have to be renewed before their expiration date in order to be able to travel abroad. 

Passports have a certain validity period, which is shorter for children. For example, passports of children under five have a two-year validity; those aged between five and ten have three years. 

The passport validity for children between ten and 16 is five years, while passports for children over the age of 16 can be valid for up to ten years. 

ID cards last for two years for children under five years old, three for children aged between five and ten and five years for children between ten and 16 years old.

 Furthermore, children over 16 years old hold passports that are usually valid for five years.

Norway Witnesses a Record High Demand for Passport & National IDs in Post-Pandemic 
Right after the pandemic, Norway saw a historic demand for passports and national IDs. The country had to produce 922,000 passports and ID cards in 2022. 

In 2024, this number dropped to 655,000 – down from the 755,000 that were recorded in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic started. 

Over 400,000 Norwegians could be subject to apply for a passport or an ID, in some cases for both documents.
