Organizations Demand Urgent Reform to Italy’s Work Permit System

Organisations that support the rights of migrants have demanded that the Italian authorities take urgent action to reform the current work permit system.

According to the organisations, the current rules are not adequate and leave many without opportunities, Schengen.News reports.

Concerned with the situation, Tavolo Asilo e Immigrazione (TAI), which has a number of members, sent a document to the office of the prime minister.

As Info Migrants explains, in this document, the TAI group criticised the Italian work permit system for workers from abroad and called it inefficient, inadequate, and dangerous. In the same document, the group urged the Italian government to replace the current rules with more favourable ones.

The document by the group was sent last week, just before the “click days” during which Italian employers are able to make requests for foreign workers.

Each year, Italy sets a limit on the number of non-EU workers that will be allowed to enter the country for work purposes. Nonetheless, according to the TAI group, the quotas are not enough the meet the demand for workers.

Such a conclusion from the group was made after on February 5, all of the 25,000 available spots were taken within only four minutes. Since the system works like a “littery”, the TAI group argued that the system leaves out many foreign workers who are already within the territory of Italy.

TAI Suggests These Steps to Improve the System
To give everyone the same opportunities and to make the system more efficient, the TAI group has proposed a number of measures.

According to TAI, the Italian government should permit employers to hire foreign workers without setting strict quotas and remove the limitations that currently apply to workers based on their nationality and job sector.

The group also proposed that the authorities create a new way for foreigners to enter the territory of Italy for work purposes, such as via sponsorship and job-seeking visas.

In addition, the TAI called for migrant to be given the right to stay in Italy while looking for a job even if they lose their job for reasons that are beyond their control.

Recommendations have been made to also allow those already in Italy who hold valid permits to apply for jobs, to allow all types of residence permits to be converted into work permits, and lastly, to make the work permit process faster and to hire additional staff.
