Argentinians have become the third-largest nationality to obtain Italian citizenship in 2023. Over 16,000 Argentine nationals have become naturalised during this period, quadrupling from 2021 figures.
According to Istat, the Italian Office for Statistics, the reason for Argentinians seeking Italian citizenship is related to historic emigration, as 88.9 per cent of acquisitions were recognitions of Italian citizenship obtained as descendants of an Italian ancestor, Schengen.News reports.
Increased Interest of Egyptians to Obtain Italian Citizenship Was Registered in 2023
Egyptians have also shown a particularly high interest in obtaining Italian citizenship in 2023, as the number of applications for citizenship rose by 145.7 per cent. In many cases, applications were filed by minors, suggesting that many of these acquisitions were for young people seeking residency.
Ukrainian women were on top of the list of applicants for Italian citizenship in 2023, the majority of whom obtained citizenship by marriage – 36 per cent of the total. Albanian women followed second (19.8 per cent) and Moroccan women (19.3 per cent). For Albanian and Moroccan women, it is very common to marry men of the same nationality who have recently obtained Italian citizenship.
The data also reveals that the majority (92 per cent) of those who obtained Italian citizenship in 2023 were non-EU citizens, representing 196,040 people. Compared to 2021, this number increased by 78.9 per cent and is also the highest recorded in the last 13 years.
These 2 Reasons Represented 70% of All Acquisitions in 2023
The majority of acquisitions in 2023 were recorded due to residency, showing that almost 78,000 applicants had spent over ten years living in Italy. The second most common reason was obtaining citizenship through parents, which occurred in 59,000 of the cases. These two reasons represented 70 per cent of total acquisitions.
The largest relative increase, however, concerns iure sanguinis proceedings py right by blood, which in 2023 continue to grow compared to both years: 2021 (+241 per cent) and 2022 (+31 per cent).
Following this, compared to 2021, acquisitions by residency increased by 72.8 per cent, while those by marriage rose by 70.7 per cent. In addition, obtaining Italian citizenship from the right by blood, meaning receiving it from parents to minors, increased by 64.1 per cent.
