Norway’s Minister of Justice and Public Security, Emilie Mehl, said that all persons, including Ethiopians, who are staying irregularly in Norway must return to their home countries quickly and efficiently.
Through a statement, the government of Norway said that in order to do so, the government is attempting to tighten cooperation with their countries of origin, Schengen.News reports.
Mehl met with the Foreign Minister, Gideon Timothewos Hessebon, who is also responsible for migration.
Norway and the European Union imposed tightened visa requirements for Ethiopians in the spring of 2024 as a result of poor cooperation.
The Minister added that Norway has been clear that nationals of other countries who are illegally staying in Norway must return to their home countries.
Mehl added that all countries have an obligation to take back their own citizens and make the process of return easier.
The Minister and Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister shared a common opinion that migration should take place through legal channels, stressing that the Ethiopian side has called for closer cooperation on labour immigration from Ethiopia.
Ministers from both countries also highlighted the importance of regular migration. According to them, in the absence of this, the risk is that a large number of migrants will move towards southern Africa, as well as towards Europe and the Gulf States, to find work.
When it comes to migration, Norway has imposed tightened rules to better manage the situation.
