No exceptions for H-1B workers in US! DHS mandates all immigrants to carry an ID 24/7, backing Trump-era rule

In a significant development, the U.S.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a policy requiring all immigrants, including those legally residing on visas such as H-1B and student permits, to carry their identification documents at all times.

This directive follows a recent court ruling that upheld a Trump-era policy mandating stricter registration and identification procedures for immigrants.

Mandatory Registration: All noncitizens aged 18 and older must register through an official DHS website, providing personal information, fingerprints, and home addresses.

Failure to comply could result in fines of up to $5,000 and imprisonment for up to six months.

Continuous Carry Requirement: Once registered, individuals will receive documentation that they are required to carry at all times.

Not possessing this documentation could lead to criminal penalties, including fines and potential deportation.

Legal and Social Implications:

The policy has faced criticism from various advocacy groups, who argue that it mirrors historical discriminatory practices and could lead to racial profiling.

There are concerns that the requirement might deter immigrants from accessing essential services, such as healthcare and law enforcement assistance, due to fear of detection and potential deportation.

Administration's Stance:

The DHS maintains that the policy is a necessary measure to enhance national security and ensure that all individuals residing in the country are properly documented.

The administration emphasizes that compliance is mandatory and that there will be no exceptions.

Ongoing Developments:

As of now, the registration process is set to begin shortly, with detailed guidelines and procedures to be provided by the DHS.

Immigrant communities and advocacy organizations are closely monitoring the implementation of this policy and are preparing to challenge it through legal avenues if deemed unjust
