Manitoba Work Permit Holders: Apply Now for a 2-Year Extension Before It’s Too Late

Manitoba has introduced a temporary public policy allowing eligible Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) candidates to apply for a two-year, LMIA-exempt open work permit. This initiative aims to support foreign workers whose permits have expired or are nearing expiration, enabling them to continue working in the province while awaiting permanent residency.

Key Details of the Policy
•        Application Period: April 22, 2025, to December 31, 2025.
•        Eligibility:
o        Work permit expired in 2024 or expiring in 2025.
o        Held a valid work permit on May 7, 2024, and have since applied for restoration or extension under relevant sections of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.
o        Had a valid MPNP Expression of Interest (EOI) profile on January 15, 2025, and maintain its validity at the time of application.
o        Resided in Manitoba prior to January 15, 2025, and have continuously remained in the province.
o        Currently employed by a Manitoba employer willing to provide a letter of employment.
o        Intend to establish permanent residency in Manitoba.

Application Process
1.        Obtain a Support Letter: Eligible candidates must apply online for a Support Letter from Manitoba.
2.        Submit Required Documents:
o        Letter of employment from the current Manitoba employer.
o        Copy of current or previous work permit, or proof of status/work authorization.
o        Copy of valid EOI profile.
Note: Applications will only be accepted once a work permit has expired or is set to expire within the next 45 days. Incomplete applications will not be processed, and Manitoba reserves the right to limit the number of support letters issued under this policy.

Importance for Employers and Workers
This policy provides a crucial opportunity for both employers and foreign workers in Manitoba to maintain employment relationships without interruption. Employers can retain skilled workers essential to their operations, while workers gain the ability to continue their employment and pursue permanent residency.
