India will be opening two new consulates in Russia- one in Kazan, and the second consulate in Yekaterinburg.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement while addressing the Indian diaspora in Moscow.
Currently, India has an embassy in Moscow and consulates in St. Petersburg and Vladivostok.
While addressing the Indian community in Moscow, PM Modi stated, "I want to share some good news with you all. We have decided to open new consulates in Kazan and Yekaterinburg.
This will enhance travel and business trade."
He further said that two years ago the first consignment was sent via the India-Russia 'North-South Transport corridor,' and "that is a remarkable achievement."
"Now India and Russia are working to open the Chennai-Valdivostok Eastern corridor," PM Modi said.
Modi is on a two-day visit to Russia and Austria. This is his first visit to Russia since Putin declared war on Ukraine in 2021.
In their first meeting since December 2023, Indian Foreign Ministet S. Jaishankar and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov reviewed various aspects of the India-Russia strategic partnership, covering defence, energy, trade, investment, and connectivity.
The meeting between Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow will likely address the Ukraine conflict, emphasizing dialogue and diplomacy.
During his visit, Modi is set to receive Russia's highest state honour, the Order of St Andrew the Apostle, which was announced in 2019 for his role in enhancing bilateral relations.
Established in 1698 by Tsar Peter the Great, this prestigious award has been conferred on 18 individuals since its inception.
