Romania to Close Over 30 Border Crossing Points
Romania and Bulgaria will gain full Schengen access on January 1, 2025.

Recently, authorities in Romania unfolded plans to close more than 30 border crossing points, from the same date. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, quoted by Libertatea.

The full Schengen membership of Romania and Bulgaria came with a condition.Under the Budapest agreement, controls at Hungary’s border with Romania as well as Romania’s border with Bulgaria will continue for at least six months, from January 1, 2025, in order to address threats to public order and security.

Through a statement, Romanian police announced that on December 26 alone, the border police officers carried out formalities for crossing the border for nearly 125,300 people, Romanian and foreign nationals, as well as for more than 35,700 means of transport that crossed the border.

Both Romania and Bulgaria became part of the Schengen Zone partially on March 31, 2024, but not also via land borders.

From the beginning of next year, Romania and Bulgaria will enter the Schengen Zone through land borders as well. This decision has been also welcomed by Hungary,as the holder of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Welcoming the full accession of these two countries to the Schengen Zone, the Hungarian Minister for Home Affairs, Sándor Pintér, previously said that abolishing land border controls for Romania and Bulgaria was among main priorities of Hungary, stressing that the decision will bring benefits to the EU as a whole.
