Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó has said that the process of crossing the Hungarian-Romanian border will become easier.
The minister said that both Budapest and Bucharest are committed to improving bilateral cooperation, from which both territories can significantly benefit Schengen.News reports.
Minister Szijjártó said that there are also plans to expand the number of border crossing points to abolish the uncertainties caused by long waiting times.
In a statement provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, the Minister said that after talks with several members of the new government, the development of infrastructure at border crossing is also very important.
Number of Crossing Points Will Be Further Increased
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó appreciated the increase in the number of crossing points from 12 to 22, which reduces the average distance between crossing points from 37 to 20 kilometres.
In addition, the Minister stressed that the number of crossings will further be increased, adding that all the necessary agreements in this regard have been prepared. He added that contracts had been signed for the reconstruction of the St Gellért Bridge in Magyarcsanád, as well as the design of a railway line connecting Szeged (southern Hungary) with Timisoara (Temesvár).
Significant Decline in Irregular Border Crossings Into EU in 2024
Irregular migration is among the main concerns of EU countries when it comes to border crossing issues.
In spite of several EU countries tightening controls at their borders to better manage this situation, the figures from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, reveal that in 2024, the number of attempts from irregular migrants attempting to reach EU countries marked a notable decrease.
The figures from Frontex revealed that in 2024, the number of those attempting to enter the EU was 239,000, a 38 per cent decrease compared to 2023 statistics.
