German Police Carries Out Nearly 830,000 Border Checks During the EU Championship

Between June 7 and June 28, 2024, the Federal Police of Germany made 830,000 police checks across the borders, which were introduced in May 2024.
One of the reasons for this security enforcement is related to the EU Championship, hosted by German cities between June 14 and July 14, 2024.
According to Dieter Romann, the head of the Federal Police Presidium said that 603 arrest warrants have been executed out of these border checks, Schengen.News reports.
Romann also pointed out that more than one arrest warrant per minute has been issued during this period.
While some 86 violent hooligans were sent away, another 85 people were arrested for politically motivated criminality.
Recently, Germany tightened measures for supporters of terrorist acts. The new measures include expulsion and deportation of foreigners who show support for such criminal acts. Even one comment can risk foreigners their stay in Germany.
The Federal Police have temporarily detained up to 150 smugglers, while 146 people were denied entry into the country.
In addition, 70 per cent of unauthorised entries were denied, accounting for 3,261 out of 4,659 entries. All of these were recorded in the last 21 days, as Romann says.
The internal border control will be in effect until July 19 but some border controls such as the land borders with Poland, Czechia and Switzerland, will continue to be effective until the end of 2024. The same was implemented at the beginning of the year.
The main reason for the extended border controls with these checkpoints is in efforts to combat smuggling criminality and limit migration, especially irregular migration.
Foreigners in German prisons have surpassed the number of German nationals, increasing by 18 per cent in 2023 alone.
There are nearly 923,000 foreign prisoners in Germany, with the most common nationalities being Turks, Poles, Syrians, Afghans, Algerians and Russians.
Foreigners in Hamburg, Berlin and Hesse prisons represent between 58 and 51 per cent of all prisoners, while nationalities can vary. Saarland has the lowest share of foreign nationals out of all states (31 per cent).
