German Consulate in UK’s Edinburgh Limits Schengen Visa Services to Only Scotland Residents

The German Missions in the United Kingdom have updated the consular districts in the country, with the German Consulate in Edinburgh limiting services to only one group of residents and the Embassy in London expanding jurisdiction.

As the authorities have revealed, since February 1, 2025, the German Consulate in Edinburgh has limited its Schengen visa services only to residents of Scotland.

This change means that only Scotland residents, including foreign residents holding a Biometric Residence Permit or a short-term study visa, will be able to have their German visa applications processed in the Edinburgh Consulate, Schengen.News reports.

On the other hand, residents of Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, North Yorkshire and Tyne and Wear who want to obtain a German visa will have to submit their application to the German Embassy in London or the visa application centres located in Manchester and London.

As the German Missions in the UK further explains, individuals living in one of the counties mentioned above can continue to contact the German Honorary Consul in Newcastle-upon-Tyne for passport matters and certifications.

However, for other consular services, they need to contact the Embassy in London.

British Citizens Are Permitted Visa-Free Entry to EU for Short Stays
British citizens are eligible for visa-free entry to the EU member states for short stays that do not exceed 90 days within any 180-day period, provided that no economic activity is being pursued.

The case is not the same for British citizens who want to stay within the territory of the EU for a longer period of time and for foreigners residing in the UK whose country of origin does not have a visa-free travel agreement with the bloc.

British citizens who want to enter the bloc for a period that exceeds 90 days for work or study purposes need to undergo the visa application process and obtain the document.

Similarly, foreign nationals residing in the UK who do not enjoy visa-free entry to the EU need to apply for a visa, too.
