Frequently asked questions about visas for students, workers and tourists coming to Canada

Foreign workers, international students, and tourists in Canada may need a visa based on their nationality. It's important to distinguish between visas and permits:

Permits (work/study) allow individuals to live and work or study in Canada and determine the duration and conditions of their stay.

Visas (temporary resident visas or TRVs) allow entry into Canada.

They can be single-entry or multiple-entry, with the latter allowing multiple re-entries during the visa's validity.

Payment: Many newcomers can pay for their visa or eTA in their local currency.

Application Process: Do not apply separately for a visa or eTA when applying for a work or study permit; these will be issued together.

Re-entry: Single-entry visa holders need a new visa to re-enter Canada unless returning from the U.S. or certain territories.

Multiple-entry visa holders can re-enter multiple times.

Status Expiry: Temporary resident status expiration dates are on the permit or stamped in the passport.

Old Passports: You can still use a visa in an old passport by carrying both the old and new passports, though it's recommended to get a new visa in the valid passport to avoid delays.

These guidelines help newcomers navigate the legal requirements for staying in Canada.
