EU May Suspend Visa-Free Agreement With Georgia, Ambassador Herczyński Says

The European Union Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, has once again said that the EU plans to respond to events in Georgia that occurred over the past 12 days, referring to ongoing pro-EU protests, stressing that it is considering all options, including suspending the visa-free regime with the EU.

Through a statement on his Facebook account on December 9, Herczyński said that acts of violence are incompatible with basic democratic values, Schengen.News reports.

Emphasizing that the EU stands firmly by those defending human rights in Georgia and other countries worldwide, the Ambassador said that there should be no tolerance and no impunity for such acts.

Urgent Action Needed to Avoid Activation of Visa Suspension Mechanism
The Seventh Report of the European Commission to the European Parliament and Council, under the visa suspension mechanism, issued on December 7, concerning Georgia, emphasises that this country needs urgent action to avoid possible activation of the visa suspension mechanism.

In addition, recently, the Dutch Foreign Minister, Caspar Veldkamp, said he would send a request to the European Union to make it clear to the government of Georgia that the path they are taking comes with a price.

The EU Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, last month said that the issue of Georgia, including a potential suspension of the visa-free travel agreement between Georgia and the EU, would be discussed at the next meeting of the Council of Foreign Affairs scheduled for December 16.

Georgia May Impose a Curfew
On October 26, parliamentary elections in Georgia were held, and the Dream Party, which has been the ruling party in Georgia since 2012, was reelected, securing the majority of the votes.

However, the recent parliamentary elections in Georgia were considered to be subject to several irregularities.

Recently, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, announced plans for the suspension of membership talks between the EU and Georgia until the end of 2028. Such comments led to mass pro-EU protests in Georgia, causing authorities in EU countries to call for additional measures against the country.

In addition, the recent EU Progress Report concerning Georgia said that the decision to adopt the law on the transparency of foreign influence does not reflect the government’s commitment to the path of the EU.

Earlier today, the government of Georgia unfolded plans to impose a state of emergency and implement a curfew.

The ruling Georgian Dream party intends to appoint Mikheil Kavelashvili as the new president on December 29.
