Denmark to Renew Residence Permits for Students Undergoing Education for Professions Experiencing Shortages

Denmark plans to introduce a new scheme next month through which the right of residence for students who are undergoing education for professions dealing with shortages will be renewed if their previous permit expires.

The main aim of the scheme is to retain talent in the country so that the labour shortages do not worsen, Schengen. News reports.

As the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) has explained, the scheme will enable foreigners undergoing education in an area with labour shortages to continue residing and studying in Denmark even after the original permit expires.

Eligible for the Scheme Are Those Whose Right of Residence Expired Between July 1, 2020 & June 30, 2024

The scheme will officially enter into force on July 1, 2024, and it will also benefit another group of foreigners, too.

According to SIRI, foreigners who were enrolled in education programmes in the past for professions that are currently in demand and who had to leave Denmark as they no longer had a right to residence will also benefit from the scheme.

SIRI has highlighted that the possibility of having the right of residence in Denmark extended will apply to foreign nationals whose residence permit was not extended in the period between July 1, 2020, to June 30, 2024.

Foreigners who get granted residence permits under the new scheme will be able to remain in the territory of Denmark for up to six months after they complete their studies.

During these six months, they can look for a job and if employed, they then get to remain in the country for a longer period.

SIRI did not reveal which professions are currently having shortages. It is believed that the country mainly intends to retain skilled workers, in this case highly educated, trained, and skilled workers.

Additional information is expected to be shared in the meantime before the new scheme officially enters into force.
