Denmark & Sweden Increase Border Protection In Effort to Protect National Security

Many European countries have tightened measures at their border controls in a bid to increase national security from potential threats.

Denmark has recently stepped up its measures by assessing threats and implementing actions on a regular basis. The reason for this counteraction is the two recent events in Copenhagen as well as Stockholm, while the security will be raised in the border with Sweden and Germany, Schengen.News reports.

The authorities also pointed out that this is a temporary measure and that following assessments, it will be continuously monitored. Some of the new measures that police in Denmark will be implementing are random checks on vehicles and travellers at joint borders with Sweden and Germany.

Sweden Extends Border Controls for Another Six Months
In addition to Denmark, Sweden has also taken action to improve its security measures by extending border control. The Swedish Interior Minister has informed the EU Commission that border controls at land, air and sea borders will be prolonged.

The reasons for this decision are the serious threats to public order as well as internal security which follows recent terrorist events.

The controls have been extended until May 11, 2025, while they were set to expire on November 11, 2024.

Germany Has Also Extended Passport Checks to All Land Borders
Germany is no stranger to the notion of increasing security at the border. Since September 16, when Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced an extension in border controls, passport checks at all joint borders with other Schengen countries have been implemented. The measure is expected to expire in six months.

The minister pointed out that these measures aim at strengthening security and combating irregular migration. In addition, she highlighted that passport checks have been deployed to address security threats and fight criminal activities like human smuggling.

Border controls are effective for all land borders with other countries, including Denmark, France, and the Netherlands, while passport checks have already been implemented in Austria, Czechia, Poland, and Switzerland. Although these measures, which were initially introduced due to a significant increase in asylum seekers, were meant to be temporary, they have been continuously extended since they were initially introduced.
