Denmark Announces Increase in Citizenship Application Fee to €804

The fee for applying for Danish citizenship will increase from 4,000 (€536) to 6,000 Danish Krone (€804), the Ministry of Immigration and Integration has confirmed through a statement.

Announcing the new changes, the Ministry argued that the new fee would increase so that it more closely reflects the costs of case processing, Schenge.News reports.

The Minister said that there often were examples of applicants applying several times and being rejected, considering that it is not right that people can apply multiple times without paying.

Prior to 2018, the fee for applying for Danish citizenship was 1,200 DKK (€168). In 2021, the fee was raised from 3,800 (€509) to 4,000 DKK, and now the fee will be 6,000 DKK, thus accounting for a 50 per cent increase.

Denmark to Introduce a Fee for Repeated Applications

Through the statement, the Ministry also announced that a new fee would be introduced for repeated applications from those who have previously had two applications for citizenship rejected.

In this regard, Immigration law rapporteur Heidi Bank (V) said that it is “absolutely necessary” to revisit the rules on citizenship again and again in order to close loopholes that can be abused by persons “who should not have access to Danish citizenship”.

The government of Denmark announced plans to introduce a new fee for repeated applications for citizenship in March 2023.

Prior to the measure, applicants were required to pay a 4,000 DKK fee and could reapply at no additional cost countless times.

Internationals in Denmark planning to apply for citizenship anytime soon can do so under the current rules after the changes in fees will not take effect until parliament passes a bill providing for this.
