Indira Gandhi International Airport's Terminal 2 will be closed for refurbishment in 2025-26, with upgrades aimed at enhancing passenger experience and supporting future growth. The closure will last 4-6 months, but Terminal 1 will absorb the additional load, minimizing disruption.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) on Friday announced that the Terminal 2 (T2) of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) will temporarily close for refurbishment. The four-decade-old terminal, primarily serving domestic flights, is set to undergo major upgrades during the 2025-26 financial year.
Refurbishment Timeline and Purpose
The refurbishment work is scheduled to commence in April 2025 and is expected to be completed by the September quarter (Q2 FY26). Terminal 2 will remain shut for approximately 4 to 6 months during this period to facilitate the upgrade.
The decision to refurbish T2 is part of DIAL’s broader effort to modernize the airport and cater to increasing passenger demand. The upgrades will improve passenger experience, enhance operational efficiency, and boost the terminal’s capacity to handle future growth.
Impact on Operations
DIAL assures minimal disruption to airport operations during the refurbishment. The newly developed Terminal 1 (T1), also catering to domestic flights, will handle the additional passenger load during T2’s temporary closure. IGIA currently manages around 1,300 flight movements daily across its three terminals—T1, T2, and T3.
Key Upgrades for T2
Terminal 2 (T2), built 40 years ago by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), will undergo significant improvements, including:
• Infrastructure Upgrades: Modernization of passenger facilities, including check-in counters, baggage handling systems, and security checkpoints.
• Operational Efficiency: Streamlining processes to minimize passenger wait times and ensure a smooth travel experience.
• Enhanced Passenger Comfort: Upgrades to lounges, restrooms, and other passenger amenities to provide a more comfortable and enjoyable travel experience.
DIAL CEO Emphasizes the Need for Modernization
“The refurbishment of T2 is crucial to meet the growing demand for air travel in India,” stated DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar. “By upgrading key infrastructure and enhancing operational efficiency, we aim to elevate the overall passenger experience at Delhi Airport.”
What This Means for Travellers
Passengers using IGIA for domestic flights in 2025-26 should plan for changes in terminal operations. The upgraded T2 will aim to provide a better travel experience while accommodating future air travel demands.
For updates on terminal operations and flight schedules, travellers are advised to check with their airlines and stay informed through official DIAL announcements.
