Croatia Has an Urgent Need for Foreign Workers but They Are Not Suitable, Industry Leaders Say

The Croatian authorities have said that there is an urgent need for foreign workers in the country to help with the ongoing labour shortage.

During a conference organised by Bloomberg Adrija, industry leaders said that there is currently a smaller number of domestic workers, automatically increasing the need for foreign workers, Schengen News reports.

At the same time, the industry leaders stressed that while there is an urgent need for workers from other countries, foreigners are not very suitable for the job positions, raising concerns about the future of the industry.

Workforce Is One of Main Challenges for Croatian Companies

Data show that currently, one in 15 employees in Croatia is a foreigner, with the number expected to grow in the next years.

Commenting on the current needs that the country has for foreign workers, the Director of the Business Sustainability and Green Transformation Sector of Podravka, Nataša Mikuš Žigman, said that the workforce has become one of the main challenges not only for Podravka but for the majority of companies in Croatia.

She further revealed that Podravka, which is a well-known EU food company, at the moment has around 160 foreign workers.

However, she suggested that the company will soon see an increase in the number of this group of workers as there are no domestic workers to fill the available positions.

Foreign Workers Are Not the Best Solution to Help Croatia with Shortages, Ćosić Said

The Board President of Đuro Đaković, Marko Ćosić, also stressed that Croatia is in need of foreign workers.

However, according to him, it is equally hard to find adequate foreign workers as it is to find domestic workers.

At the conference organised by Bloomberg Adrija, Ćosić emphasised that foreign workers are not a good solution.
