Canada’s Vernon in British Columbia sets AI Driven Wildfire Detection System to Save Forest and Boost Tourism

Vernon, B.C., in Canada has introduced a cutting-edge AI-driven wildfire detection system, revolutionizing fire safety in the region.

Developed by Vancouver-based SenseNet, this system uses cameras and air sensors to monitor volatile organic compounds, particulate matter, and thermal imaging, allowing for near-instant detection of wildfires.

Vernon Fire Chief David Lind likens the system to a forest fire alarm, providing early warnings and enabling rapid response times.

This innovative technology, tested over two years, is now fully operational with 150 sensors, and Predator Ridge Resort has added 100 more sensors.

The new AI system enhances existing fire detection methods, crucial for a region prone to extreme weather and drought.

Last year’s wildfire season was the most destructive in B.C. history, burning over 28,000 square kilometers and prompting mass evacuations.

The early detection capability aims to prevent such devastation, improving safety and boosting tourist confidence in the Okanagan area.

Predator Ridge’s substantial investment in this technology underscores its commitment to guest and resident safety.

By integrating advanced fire detection with traditional methods, the region hopes to mitigate wildfire impacts and ensure a safer future.

“This is another tool, not a replacement for existing ones,” said Lind, emphasizing the importance of maintaining vigilance and reporting any signs of smoke to authorities.

The successful implementation of this AI system could serve as a model for broader regional adoption, enhancing wildfire early detection and response capabilities across British Columbia.
