Canada Tightens Permanent Residency Rules, Revamps Immigration Point System: How Will It Impact Indians

The Canadian government plans to implement measures to reduce fraud in the Express Entry System by removing the extra points candidates receive for having a job offer. The government further plans to introduce new measures aimed at reinforcing the integrity of the immigration program and reducing fraud related to the Labor Market Impact.

In a move aimed at reducing fraud, Canadian immigration authorities are considering a significant change that would remove the advantage given to applicants for temporary or permanent residency who have a job offer. This step is part of a broader effort to strengthen the integrity of Canada's immigration system and ensure that the process remains fair and transparent for all candidates.

Canadian immigration authorities are taking steps to combat fraud by eliminating the additional points awarded to applicants for temporary or permanent residency who have a job offer. This proposed change was announced by Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Marc Miller, during a press conference in Ottawa on Tuesday.

Miller further explained that the government plans to introduce new measures aimed at reinforcing the integrity of the immigration program and reducing fraud related to Labor Market Impact Assessments (LMIA), including the removal of extra points for job offers in the Express Entry system.

“Temporary foreign workers who apply to become permanent residents through Canada’s immigration system will no longer get additional points if they have a job offer that’s supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA),” Immigration Minister Marc Miller said in a press conference.

1.6 Lakh Indians Chose Canadian Citizenship In Five Years
Many temporary residents, including international students and foreign workers, seek to immigrate to Canada as skilled workers. They apply through the Express Entry platform, which awards points based on factors like education, work experience, language proficiency, and age.

Between January 2018 and June 2023, nearly 1.6 lakh Indians, or about 20 per cent of those renouncing their citizenship, chose to become Canadian citizens, according to data from the Ministry of External Affairs.

In 2022, 59,503 Indian-born individuals became Canadian citizens, marking a 171 per cent increase from the previous year, representing 16 per cent of all new Canadian citizens. Between 2013 and 2023, the number of Indians immigrating to Canada grew by 326 per cent, from 32,828 to 139,715. Additionally, Indian enrollment in Canadian universities surged by over 5,800 per cent in the past two decades, from 2,181 students in 2000 to 128,928 in 2021.
