Canada introduces new credential assessment organization for architects

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced the designation of a new professional body to issue Educational Credential Assessments (ECAs) for architects interested in immigrating to Canada. This step is a crucial component in the immigration process for individuals seeking economic permanent residence in Canada.

To qualify for various economic permanent residence programs, applicants must demonstrate that their foreign educational credentials—such as degrees, diplomas, or certificates—are equivalent to Canadian credentials. This is achieved by obtaining an ECA from an IRCC-designated multi-purpose ECA organization or professional body.

Effective May 20, the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB) will be officially designated by the IRCC to issue ECAs for applicants who list the National Occupational Classification (NOC) for Architects (code 21200) as their primary occupation. This development allows those in the architecture profession to verify the equivalency of their foreign educational qualifications with Canadian standards.

The ECA issued by CACB will play a dual role, confirming the authenticity and equivalency of foreign education to Canadian standards and serving as a step in the licensing process for architects in Canada. This designation is part of the government's ongoing efforts to streamline the immigration process while ensuring high professional standards.

Applicants who require an ECA for immigration or professional licensing purposes should look for more detailed information online. This will guide them through the process and assist them in making informed decisions about selecting an appropriate ECA organization.

Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for Express Entry: What It Is and Why You Need It
An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is a critical step for individuals seeking to immigrate to Canada through the Express Entry system. It is used to verify that a foreign degree, diploma, or certificate (or other proof of your educational credential) is valid and equivalent to a Canadian one.

There are various types of ECAs, but for immigration purposes, you must obtain an ECA from an organization designated by the IRCC. If you've obtained another type of ECA for reasons like employment or education, you might need to get a separate ECA for immigration purposes, or it may be possible to get it re-issued, depending on the type of ECA and the issuing organization.

Why Do You Need an ECA for Express Entry?
To create an Express Entry profile, you must include your ECA report and the reference number. This is a mandatory requirement for certain immigration programs under the Express Entry system, such as the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP). An ECA confirms that your educational qualifications meet Canadian standards, helping the IRCC evaluate your eligibility for immigration.

While an ECA is crucial for immigration purposes, it does not guarantee that you'll find a job in your field, get a job at a certain level, or obtain a license to practice in a regulated profession. If you plan to work in a regulated profession, you must also meet the licensing requirements of the specific province or territory in which you intend to settle.

Your ECA report may be helpful when looking for a job in Canada, as it validates your educational qualifications. However, it is important to note that obtaining an ECA does not automatically grant you employment or licensing. It is advisable to research the licensing requirements and job market in your chosen province or territory to understand the additional steps you may need to take.
