Canada has changed the rules of its post-graduation work permit for international students

As of February 15, 2024, the Government of Canada implemented changes to the post-graduation work permit program (PGWP). Students who have completed a master’s degree program, even under two years, will now qualify for a 3-year PGWP, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria.
However, starting September 1, 2024, students enrolled in curriculum licensing agreement programs will no longer be eligible for a PGWP. In addition, the special measures for distance learning and PGWP validity have been extended until August 31, 2024.
A post-graduation work permit is an open work permit granted to foreign students upon completion of their studies in Canada. PGWP holders are free to work anywhere in Canada for any employer for as many hours as they like.
The length of your PGWP depends on the level and duration of your study program, as well as the expiry date of your passport, whichever comes first.

Are all international students eligible for a PGWP?
You may be eligible for a PGWP if you graduated from a designated learning institution (DLI) and want to stay in Canada temporarily to work. A DLI is a school approved by a provincial or territorial government in Canada to host international students.
Graduation from a DLI doesn’t automatically make you eligible for a PGWP. Check the DLI list to find out which schools have eligible programs.

Who is eligible for a longer post-graduation work permit?
Graduates of programs that are at least two years in length at PGWP-eligible designated learning institutions are eligible for a 3-year PGWP, as are graduates of master’s degree programs less than 2 years in length.

For master’s degree program
If your program was less than 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials)
You aren’t eligible for a PGWP.

If your program was at least 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials)
You can apply for a 3-year PGWP, even if the length of your master’s degree was less than 2 years, as long as you meet all other eligibility criteria.

This does not apply to certificate or diploma programs.

How long does it take to get a PGWP?

Applicants are permitted to work in Canada while awaiting the processing of their PGWP, given that they submitted their application before the expiration of their student permit. There is a 180-day window within which you must apply for your PGWP from the date you finish your study program.
You can now apply for a PGWP from abroad if you leave Canada after completing your education.
