Express Entry Round of Invitations Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) ranks potential candidates in the pool using a points-based system called the CRS score calculator. In an Express Entry invitation round, IRCC -
Chooses the type of draw,
Decides the number of candidates,
Identifies the highest-ranking candidates, and
Invites them to apply for Canada PR.
Types of Rounds of Invitations IRCC holds different types of rounds of invitations throughout the year.
General rounds of invitations
In general rounds of invitations, IRCC invites highest-ranking candidates in the pool who are eligible for programs managed through Express Entry i.e. Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, Canadian Experience Class and Provincial Nominee Program.
Program-specific rounds of invitations
In program-specific rounds of invitations, IRCC invites highest-ranking candidates who are eligible for a specific Express Entry program linked with a Provincial Nominee Program.
Category-based rounds of invitations
For category-based Express Entry draws, Sean Fraser, Canada’s Immigration Minister, establishes a category to meet a specific economic goal. IRCC then invites highest-ranking candidates in the pool who are eligible for the targeted category. New Category-Based Draws For Express Entry Sean Fraser, Canada's Minister of Immigration, announced on May 31 that the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) has finalized new categories for selecting candidates in Express Entry draws. These categories were chosen after considering labor market predictions and consulting with various partners, stakeholders, provincial and territorial governments. The categories for selection are:
French-language proficiency
Healthcare occupations
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations
Trade occupations
Transport occupations
Agriculture and Agri-Food occupations
Category-based selection draws have been expected since June 2022 when the Government of Canada amended the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. These changes allow the selection of immigrants based on specific attributes that align with Canada's economic priorities, such as having relevant work experience to address labor market needs or having knowledge of the French language.
