Brexit Ruining Plans of Britons Interested in Buying Homes in Spain

Brexit has been considered the main reason for ruining the plans of Britons interested in moving to Spain, following the Spanish Prime Minister’s intention to ban property purchases by non-EU nationals.

Earlier this month, the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, said he plans to impose a 100 per cent tax on the value of properties bought by non-EU nationals, Schengen.News reports.

The Spanish PM noted that the decision that came following the announcement of the abolishment of the Golden Visa Program came to meet the country’s housing emergency.

UK’s Withdrawal From EU Brought New Difficulties
A group of advocates from the United Kingdom told the Independent that Britain’s withdrawal from the bloc is the main cause of distress for those who had been hoping to move to sunnier places.

According to Wilson, the new measures, supposing they will be passed by parliament, will only bring new difficulties in addition to the ones that Britons face in Europe as non-EU nationals.

Attempting to Deal with Overtourism
Spain is also attempting to curb the spread of short-term rentals to address the housing crisis. The Spanish PM, Pedro Sanchez, said that housing is among the biggest risks in Europe, emphasising that housing must become a right and a pillar of the welfare state.

Sanchez said that Spain is subject to this serious problem, with significant social and economic implications, requiring a response from society and public institutions.

Spain is among the most visited European countries, which has often led authorities in this country to find new measures to better manage over-tourism.

The figures provided by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism revealed that in 2024 alone, a total of 94 million tourists visited Spain, accounting for a ten per cent increase compared to 2023 statistics.

As a result of an increasing number of tourists, Spain has seen protests in several parts of the country, many focusing on the impact of holiday rental properties on the lack of housing in this territory.
