As of April 2025, Brazil has reinstated visa requirements for citizens of the United States, Canada, and Australia.
This policy reversal ends a six-year visa exemption introduced in 2019 under former President Jair Bolsonaro, which was aimed at boosting tourism. The decision reflects Brazil's traditional approach of diplomatic reciprocity, as citizens from these countries are still required to obtain visas to enter Brazil.
Key Details of the New Visa Policy:
• Visa Requirement: Nationals of the U.S., Canada, and Australia must now obtain a visa to enter Brazil for purposes such as tourism, business, sports, artistic performances, or airport transit.
• Application Process: Travelers can apply for an Electronic Visitor Visa (eVisa) online through Brazil's official portal: https://brazil.vfsevisa.com. The eVisa is designed to simplify the application process, eliminating the need for in-person consulate visits.
• Processing Time and Validity: The average processing time for an eVisa is approximately five business days. Approved eVisas are typically valid for five or ten years, allowing stays of up to 90 days per year. Travelers may apply to extend their stay, with a maximum cumulative stay of 180 days per year .
• Financial Documentation: Applicants are required to provide proof of financial means, such as recent bank statements or pay stubs, to demonstrate their ability to support themselves during their stay in Brazil .
This policy change underscores Brazil's commitment to diplomatic reciprocity and aims to align its visa policies with those of other nations. Travelers from the affected countries are advised to plan ahead and ensure they obtain the necessary visa before traveling to Brazil.
