Australia announced it will cap international student enrollments at 270,000 for 2025, aiming to manage record migration levels that have contributed to rising home rental prices.
This decision follows the phasing out of COVID-era concessions for foreign students and workers.
Education Minister Jason Clare noted that international student numbers have risen, with a significant increase in private vocational training.
These reforms aim to make the sector more sustainable.
The move comes as net immigration reached a record high, driven largely by students from India, China, and the Philippines, exacerbating housing market pressures.
The government has also increased visa fees and closed loopholes to curb migration.
