Australia and New Zealand Introduce New Occupation Lists for Work Visas

Australia and New Zealand are preparing to launch new occupation classification systems to simplify visa processes for foreign workers. New Zealand will implement the National Occupation List (NOL), while Australia will introduce the Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA), replacing the existing ANZSCO system.

Australia and New Zealand are set to roll out new occupation classification systems, making it easier to issue visas for foreign workers.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics and Statistics New Zealand has announced that while the two countries will maintain some comparability, each will introduce its tailored system to better suit its labour market needs.

Current ANZSCO System to Be Replaced
Since 2006, both countries have shared the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO), a system used to classify occupations for visa purposes. However, labour market changes and increasing differences between the two nations have led to the development of new, country-specific classification systems.

Understanding ANZSCO
ANZSCO, the current classification, grades occupations from 1 to 5, with 1 being the most skilled and 5 being the least skilled. This system will soon be phased out, and both Australia and New Zealand’s new systems will take over, providing more accurate classifications tailored to their respective labour markets.

New Zealand’s National Occupation List (NOL)
New Zealand will introduce the National Occupation List (NOL), which is specifically tailored to the needs of its labour market. This new system will replace ANZSCO for visa issuance.

The changes are scheduled to take effect from 20 November 2024. However, there will be a transition period, and Immigration New Zealand will continue using ANZSCO until a final switchover date is confirmed in 2025.

Australia’s New Occupational Classification
Australia will also move to a new classification system called the Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA), which is set to be released on 6 December 2024. This system will similarly replace ANZSCO and better align with Australia’s specific workforce needs.

What This Means for Foreign Workers
For those looking to work in Australia or New Zealand, understanding these new systems will be crucial for a smooth visa application process. Both systems are expected to refine how occupations are classified, making it easier for skilled workers to match their job roles with visa requirements.

Work Visas and the New Classifications
To obtain a work visa in Australia or New Zealand, applicants will need to demonstrate that their skills and qualifications match an occupation listed in the respective country’s new classification system. This ensures that foreign workers contribute to the local labour market and meet the specific needs of the economy.

Additional Considerations
Foreign workers should also be aware of other visa requirements, such as language proficiency tests and health examinations. It’s advisable to consult with immigration authorities or a registered migration agent for personalized guidance on the visa application process.

Transition Period and Future Updates
While the new systems aim to improve the visa issuance process, a transition period will allow employers, immigration authorities, and applicants to adjust. Immigration New Zealand has stated that they will continue to use ANZSCO until the switch to the National Occupation List is fully implemented in 2025.

Opportunities for Foreign Workers
With these changes, both countries are showing their commitment to adapting to evolving labour market demands. For foreign workers, this presents an excellent opportunity to explore work visa options.

By understanding the specific classification systems in each country, applicants can increase their chances of securing the right visa and finding employment that matches their skills.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the new occupation classification systems in Australia and New Zealand aim to better align with their evolving labour markets. Foreign workers should stay updated on these changes to ensure a smooth application process and maximize their employment opportunities.
