89% Increase in Visa Applications From Brazilians to Portugal Within a Year

An 89 per cent increase has been registered in the number of visa applications from Brazil to Portugal between 2022 and 2023, according to the figures from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) statistics.

In 2022, there were registered 11,686 applications while last year the number increased to 22,126, Schengen.

However, the figures from the MNE, obtained by Diario de Noticias, revealed that with the introduction of the work-seeking visa in November 2022, this kind of visa was the most famous one.

The work-seeking visa of Portugal saw almost 8,000 applications, representing a total of 36 per cent of the total of 22,126 cases. In second place, is ranked the visa for family compensation, with 13 per cent of the total cases.

Other visa types remained stable last year, such as temporary stay visas for exchange or 12 per cent, residence for research 11 per cent and retirees seven per cent.

Since the introduction of the work visa, in November 2022, 35,801 visas of this type have been issued.

When it comes to the demand for Portugal’s visas, Brazil leads in demand, with a total of 12,852 permits granted to nationals of Brazil.

According to the MNE, consular posts in CPLP countries granted a total of 91 per cent of all visas of this type.

Such an initiative aims to address the lack of workforce in some industries such as restaurants, hotels and construction, with an estimated shortage of 50,000 professionals in the restaurant sector alone.

Last month it was reported that, when it comes to the Golden Visa Program of Portugal, the interest is high among nationals from Brazil as well as North America, in spite of the removal of the real estate investment option from this program.

Such estimations were announced by Gustavo Caiuby, managing partner of Heed Capital. According to Caiuby, the demand mainly comes from senior executives’ families and retirees.

The same source revealed that since the beginning of this year, the interest in the Golden Visa Program increased significantly.
