The Golden Visa Program of Portugal experienced a record increase in the number of residence permits issued in 2023.
In particular, an increase was noted in the number of family applications, or 83 per cent year-over-year, during 2023, while individual applicants recorded a considerable increase of 21 per cent, Schengen. News reports.
In 2023, the number of family applications through the Golden Visa program was 2,091, while in 2022, it stood at 1,588.
The Regional Partner at Get Golden Visa, Werner Gruner, told Investment Migration Insider that the exponential increase in family requests underscores a fundamental shift in how the Golden Visa is perceived.
Applicants From the US in Portugal’s Top List of Beneficiaries
The opportunity to acquire residency in Portugal through the Golden Visa Program attracts a large number of internationals each year.
The figures from Imi Daily show that last year, the top beneficiaries from Portugal’s Residency by Investment Program, known as the Golden Visa Program, were nationals of the following countries:
• United States- 567
• China- 306
• The United Kingdom- 234
• Brazil- 219
• India-199
The statistics revealed that in 2023, applicants from the United States overtook the position of Chinese applicants. It shows that the interest of nationals from the US in Portugal’s Golden Visa Program increased significantly.
An increase in interest in European countries’ Golden Visa Programs by nationals from the United States and the United Kingdom has also been noted in other European countries.
The recent figures from Greece’s Ministry of Immigration and Asylum revealed that the UK and the US were at the top of the list of countries whose citizens benefited the most from the Golden Visa Program as of August 2024.
The same source showed that the UK was ranked in the fifth position while the US was in the seventh position.
Last year, there was also an increase in the number of internationals in Portugal, surging by 34 per cent and reaching a record high of 1,044,606. This accounts for an increase of 117 per cent from 2018, when the expat population of Portugal was at 480,300.
